EP Review: Drowning EP (2009)
For fans of: Modern Metal... and accessible heaviness
Italian band An Ocean Between Us were formed in 2008. The present line-up is Kla (vocals), Dan (vocals and lead guitar), Nene (guitar), Joseph (bass) and Marco (drums)
Following the road well-trodden by bands like Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine... but with a twist... A.C.B.U. are female fronted and heavy. Kla's singing is pure and impressive with a good tone and plenty of emotion. When Dan cuts in he emits a demonic gravelly sound that makes you want to give him a throat pastille. The end result is very much from the Trivium school of vocalizing - but a touch more pretty.
The musicianship is heavy, precise and well judged. There's a fine sound to the guitars with just the right level of evil intent. The drums and bass are there too. The songs themselves are all in positive territory. No song sticks out as outstanding but they all offer a lick, a riff, a drum progression or a vocal that catches your attention. The overall sound hints at greatness but is a few paces short.
Give this band a few more years to develop themselves, concentrate their sound and work out how to write a truly catchy song and they really could go places. On this evidence there's going to be plenty to like. Drowning is a fine EP... but it isn't mind blowing. Here's to next time.
Check out... The overall sound. They just need better songs to play with.
