BATRACERS - EP review added 15th March 2010
EP Review: Big Cash EP (2010)
For fans of: Rock... and Dracula's motor sport
BatRacers hail from Memphis, Tennessee; home of a...er...a famous musician or two I seem to recall. The band is Bill Rennie on bass, Mike Enright on guitar, Jimmy Enright on keys, and Robbie Payne on percussion. Everyone is listed as vocalist. although Bill seems to spend the most time behind the microphone.
The sound is ye-olde in the extreme. As far as I can make out the EP was recorded a few decades back and is simply being re-released. Sadly, I can't find anything that mentions any date apart from 2010. If you know better, spill the beans...
The title track kicks things off, and it sounds like retro Sex Pistols-esque punk with a big slab of the Kenny Loggins track 'Footloose'. It's an okay effort but it's too raw, loose and under produced for a 21st century song. If it had been released 35 years ago it might have come across better. 'She Might Be' is a touch more refined, though still as raw as a sandpapered tongue.
'Pull The Trigger' has a bass-led groovy vibe that's weirdly catchy. It doesn't do a lot that's interesting, but it draws you in and makes you bop nonetheless. Maybe it's the outlandish guitar riffs - which are strangely reminiscent of early Sesame Street for some reason! 'All The Same' is a softer number with plenty of charm. I love the mysterious keyboard riffs that lead and follow the chorus. 'Shayron' is an anonymous track that does little for me. The final entry is a cover of the Isaac Hayes (Chef from South Park) track 'I Thank You'. It's okay, but not as good as the band's originals.
Overall, Big Cash isn't a bad release, but it simply sounds dated. If you love a bit of retro rock, check it out. If not, I suggest you look elsewhere.
