EP Review: Batusis (self-titled) EP (2010)

For fans of: Punk 'n' Roll... and superhero dances

Batusis - Batusis (self-titled) EPNew 'arguably-a-supergroup' Batusis, named after a dance Adam-West did in Batman, was created around two of the biggest names in punk rock: Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls) and Cheetah Chrome (Rocket From The Tombs, Dead Boys).

The guys share guitar duties, and also take turns as lead vocalist. Backing them up are bassist Enzo Penizzotto and drummer Thommy Price, otherwise known as the rhythm section of Joan Jett's The Blackhearts.

The sound is raw party punk 'n' roll with the emphasis on big simplistic noise and unadulterated-enjoyment. If you were going to have a fight scene in a London gangster film, you could do a lot worse than borrow one of these tracks. Two of 'em - 'Blues Theme' (originally from 1966 biker flick The Wild Angels), and 'Big Cat Stomp' - are cool instrumentals. Of the other two, Sylvain’s turn on 'What You Lack in Brains' comfortably takes the honours.

Overall, this self-titled EP hints at goods things, but it's little more than a glamorised single with a couple of bonus tracks. What's on it is very good though and bodes well for a full length album...if and when that might happen.

Check out... 'What You Lack In Brains'.
