BLACK SUNDAY DREAM - review added 7th April 2011
Album Review: Light Of The Night (2010)
For fans of: Classic Rock
Black Sunday Dream comes from San Francisco's Bay Area, yet they definitely owe their sound to the classic rock and metal bands from elsewhere. These guys are all about Cream, Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Deep Purple and so on.
The playing is what you'd want and expect from this kind of band. There are lots of forceful rhythms, big drums beats, lush uncomplicated basslines and numerous well judged harmonies. The lead vocals will be a matter of taste, and I tend to think Donald Hillier's place is perhaps more on the live stage than on record, but to be fair to the man he has a sh*t-load of character and it's hard to put a price on that. Sounding like a super-lairy version of Bruce Dickinson can't be a bad thing right?
Song wise, The album is enjoyable from start to finish. It doesn't work massively well at half volume - this is music you need to turn up as loud as your speakers will allow. The super heavy 'Dead Man' is my favourite track, but to be honest you won't go too far wrong with anything here.
In Summation:
This really is a surprisingly good release. The vocals take a bit of getting used to, but when they eventually click the result is bordering on awesome. Turn it up and enjoy.
