BLACK THOUGHTS BLEEDING - review added 6th April 2010
Album Review: Stomachion (2010)
For fans of: Death Metal... and tummy particles
Stomachion is the debut full length album from German metallers Black Thoughts Bleeding. They only played their first live show in early 2008, and soon after that put out an EP, Tragedy of Evolution. After playing alongside bands like As I Lay Dying, Soilwork, Cradle Of Filth, Walls Of Jericho and more, Stomachion is where this band truly comes of age.
The happily monikered Black Thoughts Bleeding - Dominik Szelinski on vocals, Christoph Budny and Dominik Göbbels on guitar, Sebastian Opelt on bass, and Ben Overmann on drums - play a fusion of intense progressive death metal, thrash and (insert-name-here)core.
The music is full of big guitars, rapid-attack drums, aggressively-speedy solos and the sort of rhythms that could shake apart a city block. The voices are a mix of guttural howls - sometimes bordering on swine rape but generally pretty decent - and cleaner vocalising. The overall effect is like a head-on collision between All That Remains, Machinehead and Bleeding Through, all spiked with something far more extreme.
Is it good? Yeah, none too shabby actually. There are no real 'anthems' on the album, but several of the tracks get close. For music which traditionally pushes the boundaries of noise and taste, there are a lot of big memorable riffs and sing along moments on the album. This is going to be intense stuff live.
Overall this is a hard album to knock; in fact it doesn't really do anything wrong at all. All it's missing are a few more mahoosive tracks, and a bit of spit and polish on the ones already here. Definitely a worthwhile purchase for people who like to live life loud.
Check out... The musicianship. Talented stuff.
