CIRCLEDOWN - EP review added 12th October 2010
EP Review: Mobius EP (2010)
For fans of: Alt Metal... and cartoon children with swords
Circledown - Drew “Diode” Madore on vocals, DJ and synth, Kevin “Cansh” Cansian on bass, Eric “Reebus” Wisely on drums, and Dean Romanelli on guitars - hail from Atlantic City, New Jersey.
"Mobius" is the band's 2nd EP and follows their 2006 release "Trust No One" with which it rather annoying shares 2 tracks - admittedly thoroughly reworked here. Only two brand new tracks in four years? Seems a tad pikey to me, but we'll (just about) let it pass as the songs here are good.
The sound is somewhere in the realm of metalcore, with various other influences rearing their heads as the disc moves along. It's all jolly creative and, as far as I can tell, actually pretty unique in places. Diode, as he likes to call himself, has a cool voice with plenty of oomph behind it, and the musicianship is great - especially when you take into account the number of styles and techniques they employ.
Best moments are the bright and accessible opener 'Halfstep', the bubbling synth sounds in 'Crash', and the awesomely heavy final track 'ReConstitute'. In fact I'd go as far as to say the band should use the final entry as their future blueprint. The kick-drum-rich heavy sections border on the anthemic and deserve to be played to a wider audience.
"Mobius" is good as a whole, but I have to mark it down for only containing two new tracks. It's clearly about time these guys pulled their fingers out and produced a proper LP. You know what? It might actually be worth checking out.
Check out... All of it.
