CROWN OF THORNS - review added 18th November 2008

Album Review: Faith (2008)

For fans of: hard rock... and comfortable headwear

Crown Of Thorns - FaithNot to be confused with the Swedish death metal band called Crown Of Thorns, who became The Crown, and who then vanished from existence a few years back, this band is a melodic rock outfit from America.

Featuring the multi-talented vocalist/guitarist Jean Beauvoir, Crown Of Thorns offer a pleasant mix of laid back yet quietly rocking songs. Jean's voice has an unusual tone that works well here. He sounds reminiscent of modern Steve Walsh, although without the constant worry his larynx may prolapse.

The album kicks off with the pumping title track featuring some interesting guitar riffery, a wonderful multi-layered background and those smoking-jacket vocals. 'Faith' is the best track on the album, and putting the best song first is never a great idea as it always means the rest of the album will be downhill.

There isn't too far to travel though as the album maintains a consistent standard throughout. There is nothing to blow you away, but nothing to hate. For the ballad fancier this album is ideal. From start to finish the vibe is slow and sensual. Think of Faith as thermal underwear: comfortable, does what it does brilliantly, but ultimately quite forgettable.

Check out... The title track.
