CHAD SMITH'S BOMBASTIC MEATBATS - review added 1st October 2009

Album Review: Meet The Meatbats (Instrumental) (2009)

For fans of: Instrumental Funk... and, er, funky instrumentals

Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats - Meet The Meatbats (Instrumental)This is just about the easiest review ever. Do you like funky, Chili Pepper style musings with a heavy jazz bent, played in a 70's instrumental style? If the answer is yes you'll love this, I can't remember the last time I heard a finer example. If the answer is no you probably won't.

I guess I'd better expand on that though, just to fill the page if nothing else...

Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats is, and this won't amaze you, built around the drumming skills of Red Hot Chili Peppers / Chickenfoot / Will Ferrell impersonating skin basher Chad Smith. Joining him in the oddly named group is guitarist Jeff Kollman, bassist Kevin Chown (Ted Nugent) and keyboardist to the stars Ed Roth.

Chad, Jeff and Ed played together with Glenn Hughes on some of his solo work, and the relationship between the guys took off from there. Jamming together to warm up (and to all intents and purposes making some pretty sweet sounds in the process), the natural progression was to lay those tunes down on record. Matters have now moved on to such an extent the guys are a proper band and are even touring the contents of Meet The Meatbats.

I have to be honest here, this style of music is not my thing. It's impressive and I totally understand anyone wanting to listen to it, but I'm afraid it really doesn't float my boat. The best thing I can do is refer you back to the first paragraph...

Check out... Er, that first paragraph...
