Album Review: Permission To Land (2003)

For fans of: hard rock... and much silliness

The Darkness - Permission To LandDebut from one of the most hyped rock music bands of all time. Permission To Land, regardless of how good it was, would never be as good as the reports suggested. Statements such as 'the saviors of rock' were bandied around with gay abandon making rational judgment of the actual music very difficult.

Songs like 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love', 'Love Is Only A Feeling' and 'Get Your Hands Off My Woman' are, though, genuinely great tracks. A few others, wearing their AC/DC and glam roots on their sleeves, have a real appeal. Some songs are let down by Justin Hawkins silly high-pitched vocalizing, but just as many songs sound good because of it.

The Darkness are a proper love 'em or hate 'em band and most people have an opinion. But looking beyond the hype this is a reasonably solid album. It didn't save rock, especially when rock was doing very nicely anyway, but it certainly added something pretty good to the archives.

Check out... That voice. What a fruit loop!
