Album Review: X (2002)

For fans of: rock... but not Def Leppard's earlier work

Def Leppard - XLike Slang, this is one of those albums where Def Leppard chose to chase a different sound. The results are mixed.

Whilst there isn't a terrible song on the album, the pace can at times be a little slow, and the style of many of the tracks will not appeal to everyone. Songs like 'Now', 'Scar' and 'Four Letter Word' are amongst the best, although even they can suffer from an overly acoustic nature. 'Long, Long Way To Go' is arguably the most heartfelt ballad Def Leppard have ever produced, but again is poppy rather than rocky.

An album of potential but not realisation, X should have been better than this. The songs are better than Slang, but the vibe is all wrong. Whilst there are plenty of worse records around, Def Leppard this ain't.

Check out... The flip to a rockier sound in 'Now'. If only they'd stuck with it.
