Album Review: D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N. (2008)

For fans of: heavy metal... and fans of acronyms

Destruction - D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.Style wise, D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N. sounds uncannily like Venom's 2000 album Resurrection. There's an air of tongue in cheek beneath the surface. Every note, every drum beat and word sounds over the top and not entirely serious. Whether this is intentional is not clear, but the end result is bloody good so who cares?

The songs pound and punish like a steam press on overdrive. Vocalist Schmier hams it up for all he's worth as he scoots between screams, bellows and demonic castrato. This is pantomime heavy metal, but brilliant. 'Urge (The Greed of Gain)' features guest solo from Annihilator's Jeff Waters and Gary Holt of Exodus. Other guests include Vinnie Moore from UFO and former Destruction member Harry Wilkens

D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N. is a riot. It may not have any stand-out tracks, and it may have as much to do with modern technical metal as a fish in a shoe, but it has bags of character and a likeability factor off the scale.

Check out... The artwork. Be warned, some of the pictures in the sleeve, although deeply impressive, are minging.
