Album Review: Magica (2000)
For fans of: hard rock... and amazing ballads
Self indulgent codswallop or genius? Er, actually a bit of both. Whilst he's mostly known for his tenures in Black Sabbath and Rainbow, plus his early solo work (Holy Diver), Ronnie James Dio has continued to create good albums with reasonable regularity.
Magica is a concept album about, well, magica... There are few compromises made for the sake of the story, although the last track - an 18 minute epic spoken word piece by Dio himself - is thoroughly unnecessary.
Plenty of good tracks reside here, notably 'Feed My Head', the chugging 'Lord Of The Last Day' and the astonishing 'As Long As It's Not About Love', but the album as a whole is hit and miss.
Check out... 'As Long As It's Not About Love', as if you needed to ask.
