Album Review: Begin The Revolution (2010)

For fans of: Heavy Metal... and Thrash

Disaffection - Begin The RevolutionBrazilian act Disaffection - Cleiton Magno on vocals, Paul Moraes and Daniel Neves on guitar, Helô Silva on bass, and Françúar Silva on drums - formed in 2005. Their sound is firmly rooted in the style and production values of 1980s thrash/heavy metal; meaning raw, fast guitars, rampant rhythms and shouting more than singing. Although the music never becomes what you could call metalcore, there are certainly hints of U.S. hardcore in the mix, and influences ranging though Slayer, Motorhead, Anthrax and more.

The result is not without it's merits. The game has arguably moved on since the time-period this record is trapped in. Yes, this is a new recording, but its vibe is already 25 years out of date. The singing is an acquired taste too.

Whilst the musicianship is pretty damn good, Cleiton Magno's are 'interesting' to say the least. He definitely owes his approach to the aforementioned U.S. hardcore, choosing to shout and over-stylise rather than sing. Still, I can imagine plenty of people digging what he does, and you'd have to say he brings a good dose of character to the record.

There are no real stand out moments on Begin The Revolution, but as a whole it's actually quite entertaining. It'll definitely go down well with people wanting to relive a time gone by.
