Album Review: Octavarium (2005)

For fans of: prog metal... and Muse

Dream Theater - OctavariumReasonably proficient album from Dream Theater. Octavarium's first track starts off with a straight ahead, near metal sound but then reverts into the more familiar prog style the band are famed for. The rest of the album then follows this theme, but with hints of pop, modern metal and most obviously Muse thrown in.

Muse were clearly inspired by Dream Theater, but with this album the flow of creative juices is almost flowing back in the other direction. Parts of the album will be lapped up by fans, but others may cause exasperation at the unnecessarily experimental edges.

A fine album, but not an all time great.

Check out... 'The Root Of All Evil'. Monstrously heavy.
