Album Review: Scars (2010)

For fans of: Industrial Alt Rock... and abused teddy bears

Diva Suicide - Scars Diva Suicide, formed over the last couple of years, consists of DJ Grudge a.k.a. Dav Suicide on synth/programming/producer duties, Barry Carrera on guitars, Lucien on bass and the intriguingly named -XS-, whose legs adorn the front cover, on vocals.

Scars, a mini-album mastered by Geoff Pesche (Gun/Gorillaz) at Abbey Road Studios is a fusion of industrial metal, hardcore dance, gothic rock and more. The music is understandably artificial sounding, but equally quite catchy and appealing. The vocals are a little weird, but in a nicely characterful way.

This is real Marmite music that some people will love, some will loathe. It'll be at its best in a dark alcohol-fuelled rock club being danced to by people with scattergun floor moves. It doesn't quite fit in with the general ambience of an office (where I'm listening to it now), but the appeal is still clear.

As this is only a mini-album, presumably as a prequel to a full-length release. We'll withhold full judgment on the band until then. As is, Diva Suicide clearly have plenty of potential. We'd like a few more iconic songs next time - perhaps with an even stronger nod towards NIN-meets-Gary Numan - but otherwise this is slap bang on the right tracks. Good stuff.

Check out... All of it, although you might hate it.
