Album Review: The World Is Too Big For One Lifetime (2010)
For fans of: Alt Rock... and singers with cool names
Uk alt rock triplet Die So Fluid - the primeval-esque named Grog on vocals and bass, Drew Richards on guitar, and Al Fletcher on drums - started back in 2001, entering the scene with their debut EP Operation Hypocrite.
The debut album Spawn Of Dysfunction followed a couple of years later, as did over 300 shows in a few short years. Not Everybody Gets A Happy Ending came out in 2008, and that leads us onto the band's latest album, the enormously titled The World Is Too Big For One Lifetime.
The band play a sound that draws influences from far and wide. At its heart it's punk pop mixed with industrial rock and alt metal, but there's Ska and more in the mix too. It's a confident sound that doesn't sell out to anybody. This is a band making music for themselves and relying on the fact they are good enough that other people like it too. The fact these guys are seriously talented musicians - one listen to the guitar solos throughout will tell you that - only heightens the aura of cool that surrounds this LP.
The songs can be hit and miss, and much of the album is more clever and cool than it is enjoyable, but it's hard not to respect what they've produced here...and when they're good they really are very good. The faster, more boisterous moments are best. There include the catchy opener 'Figurine', the Eddie Van Halen baiting 'Mercury', the lairy 'Hearts Are Hollow', the racy 'How Vampires Kiss', and the bass-heavy 'If Wishes Were Bullets'.
There seems to be a large amount of hype surrounding this band. I'm not sure they deserve all of it, but there's no doubt they have serious talent. Anyone with a penchant for rock music with a twist would do well to check this out.
Check out... the fantastic guitar playing
