Album Review: If I Had A Fortune (2007)
For fans of: Hard Rock... and a cover or two
American singer Franky Dee is clearly passionate about his music and is very active in promoting it and gigging his way to superstardom. Listen to him live and he truly hints at excellence. His stage version of Journey's 'Any Way You Want It' sounds genuinely good.
Got to say, however, translated to record, he doesn't come across anywhere near as well. If I Had A Fortune really doesn't do a suitable job of capturing the best of his voice. In places the album is almost uncomfortable to listen to. It's a shame because he's obviously better than this.
That Journey song is a classic example. As said, live it sounds great. On If I Had A Fortune it sounds artificial and over-produced. The other covers - Queen's 'Tie Your Mother Down' and Norman Greenbaum's 'Spirit In The Sky' - don't fare much better. Best bits are the Slade-like title track, Fred Durst's half minute on 'Sexy Dancer', 'Those Days Are Over' and 'Why Won't You Dance With Me'.
I'm afraid this doesn't do a lot for me. The songs are below par and the performances don't across very well at all. If he could capture his live sound he could be onto something but, on this evidence, he won't be making his fortune for a while yet...
Check out... Franky Dee live instead.
