ELECTRIC BOYS - review added 3rd June 2011
Album Review: And Them Boys Done Swang (2011)
For fans of: Funk Rock
Let's get one thing clear before we go on. This album is cooooooooooooooooooool. Cooler than a polar bear in shades in a giant freezer. In fact that's pretty much all you need to know...but I suppose I should expand a little.
Electric Boys formed in Sweden in the late 1980s. They did pretty well for themselves over the following years, before quitting in the mid 1990s. In the beginning of 2009, the boys got back together, and this album is the result.
Mixing the sounds of hard rock, jazz funk, and 1960's groove, and infusing the lot with a drug addled haze, the result will have anyone with an ounce of bounce slinking rhythmically round the room in unison. I haven't heard an album this charismatic, or this damn fun for a long time. Yes, the guys put the brakes on occasionally and slow things down, but in general this is a masterclass in making fun rock with balls the size of a small planet.
Best songs? It's all bordering on awesome, but the bounding 'My Heart’s Not For Sale', the Beatles-esque 'Father Popcorn’s Magic Oysters', the contagious 'The House Is Rockin’', the epic 'Welcome To The High Times', the bass-lickin' 'Sometimes U Gotta Go Look For the Car', and the phat 'Rollin’ The World' all REALLY hit the spot.
In Summation:
I haven't heard the early albums from these guys (only a few individual tracks), but this album is so good I'd be amazed if they matched it. It's been well over 15 years since the last release. It was worth the wait.
