Album Review: The Second Coming (2008)
For fans of: hard rock... and interesting intro's
The second full Eden's Curse album couldn't come soon enough. The first release, whilst not the greatest album of all time, certainly had a multitude of merits and stylishly introduced the band to an unsuspecting world.
Stocky lead singer Michael Eden's looks do not bear much relation to his voice. In fact the whole band look as if they should be pumping out raucous death metal, not beautifully crafted hard rock. Eden's voice has an edge in the higher registers that give him a novel sound, although he still has plenty of power behind him where needed.
This is one of those albums where every song offers something aurally impressive, but few of the tracks stick in the mind on a permanent basis. There is a marked lack of variation between songs, although you could rightly argue that when you find a good style you should stick to it. Maybe it's because Michael Eden's voice is so recognizable. On the most memorable track 'Angels And Demons', Eden duets with the wonderful Pamela Moore (of Operation Mindcrime fame) and a totally different character emerges.
The production on The Second Coming is impeccable. Blame Dennis Ward who makes everything he touches sound like liquid gold. There is a warmth to the music you could put in your mittens to fend off frostbite.
The Second Coming is an exciting listen and gives Eden's Curse a two out of two for great albums. The best songs aren't as good as the best on the debut, but the average quality is almost as high. The Second Coming is definitely worthy of your hard earned or naughtily stolen money.
