Album Review: Symmetry In Motion (2011)
For fans of: AOR
Elevener came into existence in 2005 and released their first album, the über-intelligent sounding "When Kaleidoscopes Collide" in July 2008 on AOR Heaven. "Symmetry in Motion" is the follow-up to that well-received debut and sees a few line-up changes along the way.
The sound is somewhere between AOR and hard rock, boasting numerous Journey-esque vocal passages, a good few Toto-isms in the melodies, and plenty of meat in the rhythms and guitars. The overall effect is very nice, and Pierre Wensberg's Steve Perry (with a hint of Eric Martin) vocals make for a warm vibe. Okay, PW's singing isn't in the same league as the great SP or EM, but you can definitely hear the connections.
There are are not really any complaints anywhere else on the album either. From the singing to the playing to the production...even the artwork is spot on. The only letdown is that the songs aren't stronger. Way too much of the album is only average and, dare I say it, forgettable. 'Written In Your Eyes' has a good chorus, and 'Never Would I' is surprisingly catchy, but that's about it.
In Summation:
A wonderful sounding album that isn't so good when you look for classic songs. Great performances alone are not enough to make a good CD, but this is still a decent offering overall.
