Album Review: Caedium (2010)

For fans of: Heavy Metal... and patterned skulls

Enemy Of The Sun - CaediumCaedium is the second album from German metal act Enemy Of The Sun, and follows on from their 2007 debut Shadows. The group is built around producer and guitarist Waldemar Sorychta who has been involved with bands like Moonspell, Lacuna Coil and Sentenced, as well as founding Grip Inc. and Despair. Waldemar is joined by Jules Näveri on vocals, Alla Fedynitch on bass, and Daniel Zeman on drums.

The sound is, well, intriguing. There's a lot of straight ahead heavy metal, but it's mixed with power, black and death metal, hardcore, flamenco, disco-pop, folk, jazz and, er, just about everything else. Take elements of Morbid Angel, Pantera, the Eurovision Song Contest and more, and you'd still only be half way there.

Yep, Caedium is totally bonkers, but because of that it's actually rather splendid. None of the album is what you could describe as phenomenal, but there are moments of brilliance and coolness throughout. The best include the frantic 'Another End Of The Rainbow', the frankly balmy Mediterranean flair of 'I Am One', the Heavy-Metal-Farmer-a-like (see YouTube) 'Chasing The Dragon', the hugely memorable 'Castaways In The N.W.O.', the near-sing-along 'Sky Shooting Stars', and the seething anger of 'Stolen Sky'.

This is a bloody interesting release. It's a touch flat in the middle, but there's no denying the quality and catchy nature when they get it right. Enemy Of The Sun may be the, er, enemy of the sun...but they are friends of our ears!

Check out... All of it, maybe missing the middle.
