Album Review: Soundtrack For Your Life (2010)

For fans of: Modern Rock... and fine music

Envy Of The State - Soundtrack For Your LifeUK rockers Envy Of The State - Scott Adams on vocals, Ben Millington on drums, Darrell Smith on guitar, and Steve Tipton on bass - started out with the name ‘NewBreed’, changed it (for legal reasons) to the slightly pants 'Ever The Joker’, before finally settling on the cool moniker we see today.

The band play a cool upbeat, ultra modern pop-tinged rock that's built to decimate the charts, capture the hearts and minds of trendy music fans and - resorting to a tired phrase - provide a sound track to the summer. To be fair, it does a bloody good job.

This is as catchy as modern rock albums get. It's filled with hooks and huge sing along choruses. Singer Scott Adams has a youthful, fresh sounding voice that conveys plenty of loud emotion. He isn't a gnarly voiced rock god, but that isn't what this music is about so who cares? He, and the excellent musicianship which accompanies his every utterance, is a perfect fit on Soundtrack For Your Life.

Best moments are many. In fact there isn't a duffer on the album. Personal favourites include the achingly catchy 'Rags To Riches (Riches To Rehab)', the almost-heavy 'While Angels Are Sleeping', and the sparkling 'Our Time'.

This is a great album. You can almost guarantee you'll be hearing and seeing more of this band over the coming months on rock radio and TV. If they don't make it, something is wrong somewhere.

Check out... All of it.
