Album Review: Europe (Self Titled) (1983)

For fans of: hard rock... and eponymous debuts

Europe - EuropeFirst release from the Scandinavian legends features much more of a classic rock sound. In parts it sounds almost like older Iron Maiden... which is a long, long way from their later hair rock sound.

Even at the start of the 80's Joey Tempest had a spine tingling voice. Although the production sounds muggy you can hear the quality of the musicianship too. Songs like 'Seven Doors Hotel', 'Children Of The Time' and 'In The Future To Come' speed along with a real pace that, for fans of Final Countdown etc, may come as a shock. There are quieter, slower moments too, but this album is ultimately all about the rock.

A proper heavy rock album - it even features an instrumental - this self titled album is a great release. It won't appeal to the hair metal fan base, but if you are one of those people who can't abide the glam sound, this may well be for you.

Check out... 'Seven Doors Hotel'. They'd never get that past the fire safety officer nowadays.
