Album Review: Fallen (2003)
For fans of: alternative metal... and really cheery rock...?
Evanescence's first album is the one that contains THAT song. 'Bring Me To Life' is so huge it has its own currency. It truly is an excellent modern metal song and deserves all the credit and sales it garners. The rest of the album was never going to live up to the same level, although how close it got would always be open for debate.
Style wise, Fallen varies from thumping operatic metal, through pop and modern rock, to an acoustic downbeat emotional drawl. You find yourself shouting 'Cheer up!' at the speakers on more than one occasion. Plenty of the music is upbeat, but themes like suicide and haunting do take their toll. Fallen is as bipolar as the Earth.
Amy Lee's vocals are fantastic and many of the songs are highly pleasing to the ear. Fallen certainly isn't a one hit wonder, even if it doesn't have the consistency of an all time classic. It ain't far off though...
Check out... 'Bring Me To Life', as if you needed to ask.
