Album Review: Ghosts From The Past (2011)
For fans of: Hard Rock
Amazingly, Danish band Fate has been around since 1984 when Mercyful Fate guitarist Hank Sherman got together with Jeff "Lox" Limbo (a.k.a. Jens Meiner), Bob Lance (a.k.a. Bjarne Holm) and Pete Steiner (a.k.a. Peter Steincke). The self titled debut album followed a year later.
The only original member left these days for the band's 6th studio album is Pete Steiner, so it's fitting that the band's 2011 sound is a mix of up-to-date heavy rock mixed with a good slug of that retro charm the band pedaled back in the mid 1980s. It's surprising how heavy some of this band's playing is. It's definitely reined in for the album, but listen closely and it's easy to hear just how loud and kick-ass this band could be on the stage.
New-for-this-album singer Dagfinn Joensen does a fine job, though his tone arguably makes him an acquired taste. I like his delivery most of the time, even if he isn't up with the best singers out there. Songwise, some of the album - 'Children Of The Night' for instance - has been done to death a thousand times before. Other parts - the chorus of 'Miracle' being a prime example - sound amazing. Most songs though sound good but unexceptional...leaving the album not strong enough to be excellent and not weak enough to be poor.
In Summation:
There isn't a lot about "Ghosts From The Past" that doesn't work, but it doesn't get anywhere near the heights of superstardom. In the end, Fate have made something okay but nothing more.
