Album Review: Better Run!!! (2010)
For fans of: Hard Rock... and strangely arty covers
Songwriter/singer/guitarist/producer Marco Ferreira, the man with the name behind this album, was born in Brazil, but has been a resident of the USA since 1996. His first solo album, Fallen Heroes - featuring his brother Alex on drums - was released on Shire Records in 2002. After several other projects the second Ferreira album, Working Overtime came out.
Better Run!!! (musn't forget the exclamation marks) is the man's 3rd album and sees Finnish guitarist Patrick Sebastian, Alex Ferreira on drums, Gus Monsanto on bass joining Marco.
To be honest this album is rather splendid. It's a slow grower and has taken a lot of listens to really get into, but it was totally worth the work. There are loads of great tracks, and big portions of the album are massively catchy boasting big harmonies, sweet hooks and great musicianship. Where melodious, occasionally retro-heavy hard rock is concerned, this is near the top of the tree.
Best moments include the heavy 'n' mellow 'Set My Devils Free', the pumping 'I Want Out', The beautifully chilled 'Knocking On My Door', the bombastic 'Rule In Self', the truly excellent (and the best song on the album) 'Crucified', and the almost equally excellent (and the second best song on the album) 'History We Make'.
Marco Ferreira is a really good singer and, combined with the other guys and ably demonstrated here, capable of pumping out a first class album. Better Run!!! may have a name like a cheesy 1950's horror movie. The music is anything but horrific.
Check out... All of it.
