Album Review: Casualties & Tragedies (2009)
For fans of: Glam Punk Rock... and Wednesday 13
Gunfire 76 is the new, or should I say present, vehicle for Joseph Poole (better known as Wednesday 13). It's a punky glam project referencing amongst others Kiss, The New York Dolls and The Stooges.
The man himself has spent his life coming up with new ways to express himself musically, from the twisted Maniac Spider Trash and Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13, through the horror-spiked flirting-with-popularity Murderdolls and self-titled Wednesday 13, to the 'horror-country' Bourbon Crow. He's clearly not happy standing on the spot for too long.
Formed with Todd Youth from The Chelsea Smiles after a long tour together, Gunfire 76 remains W13's baby. Although Casualties & Tragedies was written by the pair, Todd was unable to take any part in recording and is unlikely to tour in promotion of the album. Jamie Hoover and guitarist Roman Surman are among the musicians who contributed towards the recording.
The style of Casualties & Tragedies will, in places, come as a shock to diehard W13 fans. It's accessible, not particularly rude and, in parts, as lighthearted as a left ventricle filled with helium. There's even a slow (admittedly none-romantic) ballad for goodness sakes! :) There are no real stand out moments - although 'One More Reason To Hate You' gets close - but that's not to say there's anything bad. This is a very solid release from start to finish that should appeal to anyone who like's a bit of fun party-loving rock 'n' roll.
