GARY HUGHES - stub review added 10th November 2008
Album Review: Precious Ones (1998)
For fans of: hard rock... and singers with overly nice voices
There are some pleasant songs on this, the 4th solo album from Ten front man Gary Hughes. The overall vibe is chilled and ballad orientated, even though the album does rock out frequently. Gary Hughes' voice is exceptionally soulful and he does struggle to put any aggression into a song, hence even the louder more pounding tracks retain a relaxed air.
This album has much to like on it. The songwriting is good and the musicianship is exemplary, although the production is perhaps not as crisp as you might like. The only real let down here is the way Gary Hughes' voice doesn't have that fire that's so essential to rock. Think of this is a heavy soul album and you'll be more than happy.
Check out... 'In Your Eyes'. Great start to the album.
