HALFORD - review added 17th June 2010
Live Album Review: Live In Anaheim (Live) (2010)
For fans of: Heavy Metal... and excellence live
Got to love Rob Halford. Whatever he lends his voice to is generally pretty damn good. Judas Priest are legends with him out front. His solo work under the 'Halford' moniker is awesome. Even his material with the Fight band is a fine listen.
Live In Anaheim sees him, unsurprisingly, playing live in the Californian city of Anaheim. The CD (and the DVD due out this year) were recorded in 2003, not long before Rob reunited with Judas Priest after their Tim 'Ripper' Owens period. The set list is a combination of tracks from his two solo albums, those Fight releases, and a good selection of JP songs.
The result is a seriously impressive live album. Rob Halford is on rude form (apart from the odd one or two tracks where he reins in his enthusiasm). Mike Chlasciak and Roy Z on guitar, Mike Davis on Bass, and Bobby Jarzombek on drums do a superb job backing the big man, best exemplified by opening track 'Painkiller' which absolutely, unequivocally kicks ass.
The only real downsides to this release are the omissions of certain tracks. Everyone has a different perfect set list, and it's unlikely this album will be exactly there for anybody. However, it's a good compromise that covers most of the bases, and as a whole there are enough good moments to keep even the most fickle fan happy.
For me, this is the finest live CD so far this year.
Check out... All of it. LOUD.
