Album Review: HaremScarem (Self Titled) (1991)
For fans of: hard rock... and properly freaky album covers
The first release from Canada's Harem Scarem, this eponymous album is a real gem. Forget the disturbing cover, this is a collection of feel-good songs, great melodies and excellent musicianship.
Lead singer Harry Hess has a wonderful warbling voice that sets him apart from otherwise similar vocalists and guitarist Pete Lesperance is an underrated wizard. Between them, and with the backing here of Darren Smith and Mike Gionet, they conjure some truly great songs including the storming 'With A Little Love', the beautiful 'Honestly', and the rock-monster 'Slowly Slipping Away'.
This is a great debut album from a brilliant band. Some of the later tracks are a little anonymous but overall there is a lot to love.
Check out... The cover. How disturbing?
