HATE GALLERY - EP review added 5th January 2010

EP Review: Dead Celebrities EP (2009)

For fans of: Modern Punk Rock... and not celebrities

Hate Gallery - Dead Celebrities EPInteresting EP this. On one hand it is clearly courting controversy. On the other I can understand and agree with a lot of the stuff they are singing about. It also has some bloody good music on it.

Hate Gallery is Janne Jarvis on bass and vocals, Petja Lepola and Rille Lundell on guitar, and Freddie Kvarnebrink on drums They hail from somewhere between the UK and Finland and already have one studio album - Compassion Fatigue - to their names. The Dead Celebrities EP serves as a taster for 2010's next full length release.

The sound is hard hitting, loose, punky and devoid of bullsh*t. these guys have things they want to say and aren't afraid to do so. The first track (and the one that's really got this release noticed) is an homage to people in the public eye who are hated during life but revered at death. Although its energies point towards one particular individual, it could easily refer to many deceased 'celebrities'. You know what? The words they say ring so true it hurts. Society, tabloid newspaper journalists especially, are so two faced and bandwagon-obsessed it hurts. It's good to hear a song taking back some of the lost ground from the march of stupidity we are all forced to live through.

The remaining tracks vary between good and superb. This is an EP full of music that will work better on the live stage than on record but, even so, even in recorded form it works brilliantly. This is an essential purchase for anyone who is perhaps a little tired with the modern world. And isn't that all of us?

Check out... The lyrics in the first track
