Album Review: Mean (2008)

For fans of: Heavy Metal... and sleazy thrash

Italian band Idols Are Dead - Mana (vocals), Alley X (guitar, backing vocals), Ico (guitar, backing vocals), Maxx C (bass, backing vocals) and Luka (drums) - have a sound so big you could base jump from it in total safety. Influenced by bands like Slayer and Metallica, Mean stands comparison with both. In fact this release is as good as, if not better than most of the albums either of those 'big acts' have pumped out in the last 15 years.

The musicianship on Mean is brilliant, but it's the quality of the sound that truly shakes you to your soul. If all metal bands could combine purity, heaviness and ferocity like this the world would rock a sh*t load harder.

The songs themselves are good, if not exceptional. The cover of Guns 'N' Roses' 'It's So Easy' isn't too far behind the original. Mana doesn't have the vocal personality of Axl but that's a minor complaint. 'Proud to Be Sick' sounds like Judas Priest's 'Painkiller' after giving Rob and co. some nasty pills. 'Twiggy' sounds like a comedy song and it's bloody brilliant.

Mean is a fine album, but I can't wait to see what Idols Are Dead do next. They've nailed the playing, performing and production. All they need now are the songs to back 'em up.

Check out... That sound!
