Album Review: Cast In Iron (2010)

For fans of: Heavy Metal... and musical thunder

Iron fate - Cast In IronCast In Iron is the debut album from German 5-piece Iron Fate. The band consists of Harms Wendler and Martin Pflugmacher on guitars, Jan Abraham on bass, Sascha Wendler on drums, and Denis Brosowski on vocals. They really do wear their influences proudly on their sleeves.

Iron Fate give a big clue to their sound via their name. Their music takes a big slug of inspiration from the Iron Maiden book of heavy metal. Mix that in with Judas Priest and the power/speed metal sounds of Iced Earth, Impellitteri and more and you'll have the right idea.

The performances on Cast In Iron are good, with a phat guitar sound, pummeling rhythm section and very apt vocals. Denis Brosowski takes a mix of Rob Halford's screams, Bruce Dickinson's steady lower register, and the power of singers from heavier acts like Overkill's Bobby Ellsworth. He isn't a beautiful sounding vocalist, but he can kick out a lot of volume and his tone creates a definite 'metal' edge.

Song wise, there is nothing you haven't heard a hundred times before on Cast In Iron, but the album undoubtedly does a fine job of refining the ideas of the genre. For a pure blast of metal noise it's spot on. It craves a really big memorable track or five though, as nothing on the record really stands out. As a whole it's pretty cool. As individual components, it's perhaps less successful.

I quite like this album. As said, nothing new here, but it's reasonably enjoyable all the same.

Check out... Those monster vocals.
