Album Review: Animal Factory (2010)

For fans of: Alt Metal... and evacuating demons

Imicus - Animal FactoryUK alt metal act Imicus - Miller on vocals, Dale Chapman and Dan Baker on guitar, Steve Parker on bass, and Mark Weatherley on drums - formed in 2005. After signing to Transcend Records in 2009 and releasing 'Visceral' as a single and video, 2010 finally sees the band releasing their debut album; Animal Factory.

The sound is heavy-ish in a muddy, grungy way. There's a real feeling of teenage angst in the song construction and lyrical content. Animal Factory sounds as if it helped the writers expel a lot of demons from their souls.

The problem is that the end result is incredibly depressing. There's a lot of impressive musicianship spread across the album, and some of the hooks and riffs are surprisingly iconic, but they don't save this release from being melodramatic and overly downbeat.

Plenty of people are going to love the psychological mayhem Imicus induce on their debut. I can definitely see the appeal, but it doesn't float my boat. Not even slightly.
