Album Review: A Matter Of Life And Death (2006)

For fans of: heavy metal... and wartime Eddie

Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life And DeathHeavier again than Dance Of Death, A Matter Of Life And Death sees Iron Maiden failing to find their way once more.

Many tracks have a near-classic Maiden sound but without a large chunk of the catchiness that used to distinguish them. 'Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg' on the other hand is a totally new approach. It has a raw metallic sound that's both refreshing and a little strange. The bass and drums retain their usual persona, but I'm still undecided on whether I like it or not. The other songs have a tendency to blend into each other. What they have in musicianship they lose in character. Shame.

This album is 70 minutes of forgettable songs. As a total experience it fairs better, but Maiden have always made catchy individual songs as well as great albums. This has, and is, neither.

Check out... The lyrics. They tell some fairly interesting stories.
