Album Review: Departure (1980)

For fans of: rock... and the lull before the storm

Journey - DepartureLast Journey album featuring founding keyboard player Greg Rolie, Departure starts with the fabulous 'Any Way You Want It' but then suffers a downward spiral. 'Someday Soon' is the only break in the tedium until 'Where Were You' bursts through your speakers. 'I'm Cryin' and 'Line Of Fire' are equally good tracks, but this album really is about extremes. The good songs are amazing but the lesser ones are not.

Steve Perry sounds like he could do this in his sleep. Neal Schon is a genuine rock god and needs more chance than this to stretch his fingers. The quieter songs on Departure are simply too flowery and wet and don't do the musicians justice.

Check out... 'Any Way You Want It'. Well, if you're asking, I'll have it with beer and chocolate thanks.
