Album Review: Epica (2003)

For fans of: power metal... and rock so theatrical it needs curtains and scenery

Kamelot - EpicaThe 6th full length album by Kamelot, as the title suggests this is an epic release. Epica is a concept album based on the tale of Faust.

There are numerous great songs here but, because this is a theatrical concept album, there are several interludes and breaks which corrupt the flow from song to song. Tracks like 'The Edge Of Paradise', 'Wander' and 'A Feast For The Vain' could grace any great album, but they are denied the chance to shine fully. The musicianship is beyond reproach though and clearly a lot of thought has gone into making this album a grand experience.

Concept albums are hit and miss, but this one is more toward the former. The breaks are annoying, but the quality of the songs overwhelms the negativity and produces an excellent listen.

Check out... 'Edge Of Paradise'. It's massive.
