KIMBALL JAMISON - review added 19th October 2011
Album Review: S/T (2011)
For fans of: Hard Rock
Between them, Bobby Kimball and Jimi Jamison have sung on a lot of very fine songs. With their respective bands Toto and Survivor, and songs including 'Hold the Line', 'Rosanna', 'Burning Heart' and 'The Search Is Over', these guys have become legends in rock circles. So...it's with a positive outlook I approach this release.
With songs by writers including Richard Page (Mr Mister), Jim Peterik (Survivor), Randy Goodrum (Steve Perry, Toto), John Waite and more, and musicianship handled by Mat Sinner (Primal Fear) and chums, there isn't a lot about this album that wants for improvement.
Fortunately, the result doesn't disappoint like it so easily could have done. Okay, neither of these guys sound as good as they did twenty-odd years ago, and the contrast between their styles doesn't always work, but it all still comes together with a cohesive charm so often lacking in these "superstar duet" albums.
Though not at their peak, both vocalists are better than most other singers out there. The songs are well crafted and flow well given their multi-writer origins. Best moment for me is the superb 'Can't Wait For Love', though the album has plenty of other highs and very few lows.
In Summation:
The two voices don't always tie in perfectly with each other, but this is still an album with a large chunk of charm.
