Album Review: Bet Everything EP (2009)

For fans of: hard rock... and fresh-faced sleazy-stadium punk-pop

Knyght - Bet Everything EPItalian band Knyght is Tommy (lead vocal + rhythm guitar), Olly (lead guitar + vocals), Dario (bass + vocals), The Doc (keyboards) and Mr. Svarione (drums). The band was formed when brothers Tommy and Olly decided to start a rock 'n' roll band at the age of 13 back in 2002.

They have already got a number of big(gish) events under their collective belts. Not only have they worked with producer Heiko Hinze (Motley Crue, Metal Church) they have opened for Faster Pussycat and Bang Tango. Not bad for a band with a collective age of... who knows, but they're probably younger than you are.

Bet Everything is Knyght's first big release. It may 'only' be an EP, but it's a great way to showcase these guys talents. Singer Tommy has an interesting vocal style with a rawness that should appeal to fans of the fluffier end of sleaze or the rockier end of pop. Same goes for the guitars and rhythms. Knyght play a light accessible music that, fortunately, hasn't lost contact with its heavier side. They might not kick like a mule, but they certainly play on a level playing field with goats and small antelope.

'Goin Anywhere' is a fun track. It doesn't do anything amazing, but is kind of moorish all the same. It's like a diet version of AC/DC. 'Heaven Or Hell' is punky and vaguely anthemic, but stops short of the top step of the podium. Again, there's something memorable in the mix but it's hard to put your finger (or any other body part) on what it is.

'A Million Times' is an epic ballad with a large percentage of the epic-ness removed. It's a track in the vein of bands like Keane and boasts that vast pop sound that's so prevalent in the charts nowadays. 'The Game Of Love n Hate' is an upbeat 'indie' style track with plenty of energy. This is probably the song Tommy's vocals sound best on - he's definitely better at shouting than husky swooning. 'Shut Up' closes the EP with a rockier vibe. It's the top track on the album and, if all their music sounded like this, Knyght could go places.

Bet Everything is an okay release. It isn't ground breaking or mind blowing, but there's enough on it for most people to find something to like. It covers most genres during its brief playing time, but the sound remains convincingly 'Knyght' the whole way through. As a hint for their future potential, it's not at all bad.
