EP Review: Machined EP (2008)
For fans of: Metal... and instrumentals
Paul Kleff, from Michigan in the U.S., has been playing guitar for over 20 years and counts artists like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads and George Lynch amongst his influences. Listening to this EP, you can certainly hear traces of their melodious yet powerful styles.
Machined consists of two instrumental tracks sandwiching two others featuring vocalist Jerry Keyzer. Jerry has a fine voice and brings a welcomed dimension to the EP. The instrumental tracks are okay if nothing exceptional. They certainly lack the edge of the two entries with singing.
The sound is heavy but very tuneful. I'd go as far as to say this is one of the better stabs at balancing beauty and power I've heard in recent months. 'Last Stand' is bordering on mythologically proportioned, helped in no small part by those brilliant vocals. 'Dead Line' has a different sound, but is arguably even better.
Machined is another EP release that I'd love to see leading onto a full album. I could do without the instrumentals but, a full release of Paul Kleff and (definitely) the super talented Jerry would be most agreeable.
Check out... The middle two tracks.
