EP Review: A State Of Mind EP (2010)

For fans of: Alt Rock... and great places to get lost

Lost In Vegas - A State Of Mind EPLost In Vegas - Chris Lynch on guitars and vocals, Scott Hopkins on guitars, new boy Rob Terry on drums, and David Roach on bass - hail from Tamworth in the UK. They originally formed in 2004 when Chris Lynch (Mirage) started putting the line-up together. Their first EP "Addiction" came out in 2006.

Second release "A State Of Mind" saw John Mitchell (You Me At Six, Architects, Enter Shikari, Funeral For A Friend) overseeing recording, and Tim Turan (Napalm Death, Motorhead, Lamb Of God) looking after mastering. To be honest, the quality you'd expect from guys like that doesn't always shine through, but when it does it really, really does...

The sound of Lost In Vegas is a combination of typical alt progressions, modern teeny-pop accessibility, mature rock and a multitude of nods to metal. They're an interesting sounding band with a reasonably unique take on music. The album is hit and miss in terms of memorable tracks, and components like Chris Lynch's vocals can vary in brilliance, but as a whole there's plenty to like.

Opener 'Wash Away' is deeply interesting. 'Breathe' is on the way to being a monster - maybe not quite perfection but heading in the right direction. 'Chasing The Dragon' is even better. Can't beat a drug ballad! Final track 'The World Is Ending' is arguably the best of all, boasting a fat main riff and catchy chorus.

In summation...

"A State Of Mind" acts as a pointer to future potential, but this is a band still with work to do if they want to be massive. If they can take the final couple of tracks as their future minimum standard, they may do very well for themselves.

Check out... the last two tracks.

Track List:

01. Wash Away
02. Nothing
03. Looking Back
04. Breathe
05. Chasing The Dragon
