Album Review: The Arockalypse (2006)

For fans of: heavy metal... and horror

Lordi - The ArockalypseLooking a like how GWAR would look if they had good make-up, Lordi are a Finnish take on the crazily over the top theatrical metal genre. Amazingly, for a band as 'extreme' as this, they went to and won the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest with 'Hard Rock Hallelujah'.

Musically the sound is straight ahead, although vocalist 'Mr Lordi' sounds like he's gargling frogs and is hard work to listen to. The lyrics are geared towards horror and gore but in a none-too-serious way. There are plenty of likeable tracks. The standout has to be 'Hard Rock Hallelujah' which is irritatingly catchy.

A massively fun album with possibly the worst lead singing of all time, it should be noted that Mr Lordi is so unutterably terrible he's almost good. This is a brilliant album to blast out as loud as your speakers will go, but be warned if you don't 'get' this you really will hate it!
