Album Review: Flood (2010)

For fans of: Alt Rock... and all things to all people

Melodrome - FloodMelodrome - Robby Baier on vocals and guitar, Jesko Stahl on bass, and Kali Baba McConnell on drums - hail from Massachusetts. "Flood" is the band's 3rd full studio album, and 4th release overall, following their debut The Sidewalk Ends (2002), Play America EP (2003), and Happens While You Blink (2005).

This is a band with awards to it's name and a decent sized following. It's not hard to see why when listening to Flood. The album boasts a bright accessible pop-tainted take on punk rock. You can hear the aggression bubbling beneath the surface in some of the lyrics, but the guys present their ideas in such a friendly manner you never get bogged down in whatever message they are putting across. Melodrome play throwaway pop for throwaway listeners, meaningful alt rock for those who care, and they cleverly do it all at the same time.

Best moments include the lyrically impressive 'Complacent', the charmingly mellow 'Enough', the surprisingly heavy 'With My Friends', the retro-ish 'Time On My Hands', the chart friendly 'Lie To Myself', and the very cool 'Rock With Me'.

There really is a lot to like on Flood. Melodrome may not be a household name at the moment, but there's plenty of material here to suggest they are heading in that direction. They have won awards before. I don't see any reason why they won't be winning awards again. Good stuff.

Check out... 'Lie To Myself'
