Album Review: Metallica (Self Titled) (1991)
For fans of: heavy metal... and creepy production
Moment of genius or overproduced commercialised codswallop? This is a question that has bugged me for years with this album and I'm still no closer to finding an answer. The individual songs are unfailingly brilliant, but...
Apart from 'Enter Sandman' and 'Nothing Else Matters', they all have this air of falsehood about them. It's hard to put your finger on. It feels like Metallica sat down to write the perfect metal album and wrote with their heads, not their hearts. It's like they produced what they thought we wanted to hear, not what they wanted to record.
This may be a brilliant album, but it's an album without a heart. Metallica sold their souls to make this record and it shows. 'The Black Album' is black in nature as well as name and it scares the living hell out of me.
Still, it is rather good though... Grrr!
Check out... The riff on 'Sad But True'. Heavy as a heavy thing.
