Album Review: Tread The Darker Path (2010)

For fans of: Heavy Metal... and Iron Maiden

The More I See - Tread The Darker PathHeavy thrash metallers The More I See formed in Cambridgeshire, England, back in 2003. By 2008 the band had signed to Transcend Records, just in time to release their 2nd album The Unholy Feast, an album produced by Scott Atkins (Stampin' Ground) and band guitarist Gizz Butt (The Prodigy), and mixed by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Trivium, Killswitch Engage etc...).

The band has suffered a few line-up changes over the years, leaving a current roster that includes Gizz Butt and James Cluer on guitar, Harri Wright on drums, Peter Ellis on vocals, and Drew Markwick on bass.

The sound is cataclysmically heavy, speedy and unerringly boisterous. The guitars and rhythm section sound like they want to rip off your limbs and eat them, but the overwhelming sensation comes from the vocals. Get first track 'Veiled by Greed' out the way, and the album becomes a heavy-tribute to the stylings of Iron Maiden. Peter Ellis has a real twang of Bruce Dickinson about him - confirmed by the faithful cover of 'The Wicker Man'.

Tread The Darker Path is a solid album with plenty of head-bangingly-cool moments. It doesn't do anything truly exceptional, and there are no massive stand-out tracks - although many of them are bloody enjoyable - but for a hit of Iron Maiden-marinated aggression, it's pretty damn good.

Check out... The cover of The Prodigy's 'Smack My Bitch Up'.
