Album Review: Dreams Of Death And The Death Of Dreams (2010)
For fans of: Alt Rock... and refreshing violence
Manchester, UK, band Obsessive Compulsive formed at the end of 2003. They have a couple of EPs to their name already: A Demon For Every Occasion and The Corpses Of Thought. The rather longwinded sounding Dreams Of Death And The Death Of Dreams was recorded at Parlour Studios, Kettering, with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death/The Wildhearts/Evile) and is their first full-length.
The four-piece - Kelii on vocals, Giz on guitars, Pete on bass and Dani on drums - play a screamingly angry modern pop-punk with nods to thrashy rock and a dark lyrical outlook. It's ballsy stuff that'll leave you breathless and a little bit scared at once. It's some of the finest female-fronted kick-the-sh*t-out-your-ears music I've heard in a long while.
Highlights across the album are numerous. The terrifying 'Man Vs. Machine', the bordering-on-beautiful 'A Cocktail Of Toxins', the frantic 'Spit The Medicine', the anthemic 'Exit' and the brooding 'Hell Is A Circle' are all up there. It's catchy stuff and one of the better debuts you'll be likely to hear this year. It'll leave you pale-of-skin, slumped in the corner shaking in fear, but you'll never have been happier.
This is one of those albums that gives an immediate hit of brilliance and is unrelenting from then on. It gets better with every listen and, whilst not perfect, is about a hundred times better than it has any right to be. The best thing is this isn't even an 'album band'. Obsessive Compulsive are clearly built for the stage. F*ck knows how good they are going to be live.
