OGEN - EP review added 9th May 2011
EP Review: Black Metal Unbound EP (2011)
For fans of: Atmospheric Black Metal
Ogen was formed last year. I say formed, but it's more or less a solo project by Italian vocalist and multi-instrumentalist 'Hartagga'. This EP is the first fruit of his labours, and shows plenty of influence from the darker sounds of the cold north. Ogen may come from Italy, but the sound is very much born of Scandinavia.
There isn't a spectacular amount of music to speak of, more a load of brooding passages with vocals layered over the top. The press release speaks of comparisons to Emperor and that's certainly on the money, although Ogen is several notches behind. Still, there is potential here, and if Hartagga can perhaps put together a proper band and expand his stylings and integrate more interesting melodies, he may get somewhere.
In Summation:
"Black Metal Unbound" is okay whilst it lasts, but it's not something I'd particularly want to hear again - not that it's bad; there just isn't a lot to it. Here's to next time.
