Album Review: 1ST (2010)
For fans of: Rock... and a mix of other styles
One Soul Thrust - consisting of Salem Jones and Jag Mollerup, both on guitar and vocals, Todd Pretty on drums and percussion, and Kim Lesaca on bass - hail from Edmonton Canada.
Debut album 1ST, which is just about self-titled, sees the guys pumping out a selection of tracks with plenty of variation. Italian musician Alessandro Del Vecchio handled production duties, and the legend that is Glenn Hughes tagged along for one track.
One Soul Thrust's sound is based around retro rock with a good bolt of prog, folk, punk and bar-room bravado shoved where the sun don't shine. Lead singer Salem Jones is often compared to Ann Wilson from Heart. I kind of see what people are getting at, and Salem does have a quality to her voice, but she isn't in the same league as the 'These Dreams'-meister. Good, great even, but not amazing.
The musicianship is ample, if nothing more. This is not a record that excites in a big way. It's easy to nod along to in smiling appreciation, and it's easy to like, but through several listens not once have I found myself really warming to the record. It's a shame because all the ingredients are here for some top-flight stuff. When it comes down to, the songs simply aren't that exciting. Shame really because I don't doubt these guys could create something exceptional if the planets aligned.
The best moments are Glenn Hughes' turn on 'Go Home & Melt', and the slightly silly female harmonies towards the end of 'Good Girl', but otherwise it's all rather samey and strangely uninspiring.
Overall, there's plenty of talent on this release by One Soul Thrust, but the whole is less than the sum of its parts. I expected great things from this and I'm unhappy to be disappointed. Ah well...
