EP Review: Menage À Trois EP (2010)

For fans of: Alt Rock... and the taller lady

50ft Woman - Menage A Trois EPLondon, UK, based 50ft Woman - Minki on vocals, Adie and Paul on guitars, Matt on bass, and Cormac on drums - are...er...a little leftfield. But in a good way.

Lead singer Minki, who we recently interviewed here, is a 6ft tall woman with a fetish for shoes and a penchant for musical influences from all over the show. That eclectic mix of tastes definitely comes through on this sampler EP.

"Menage À Trois" melds the usual rock, pop and punk, then throws in some early 1980s kitsch, new romanticism, indie and goth. The result is surprisingly successful, if more directed towards all-out entertainment than deep psychological fulfillment. The musicianship is beyond reproach, if unexceptional. Minki's vocals are the same. She has a pleasantly decent voice that fits perfectly with the EP's mood, but she's never going to challenge Ann Wilson or Pat Benatar. Then again, who ever does?

All three songs here are good in their own right and boast strong individual personalities. If I had to pick one I'd probably go for the L7-esque 1st track.

In summation...

This is a fine introduction to 50ft Woman. They'll need to lift their game a few notches when they produce a full length, but this shows they are well on the way. Add in the live shows they put on, and they could become a firm favourite with a lot of people pretty damn quickly.

Check out... Minki's shoe fetish...
