Album Review: Cowboys From Hell (1990)

For fans of: groove metal... and a bit of leftover glam

Pantera - Cowboys From HellAlthough Pantera's 5th album and their 2nd featuring Phil Anselmo, this was the arguably the breath through release that made the world take notice. Before this they had been more of a glam metal band, albeit a heavy one, with candy floss perms and unnecessarily tight spandex. Probably why you struggle to find the albums on sale nowadays...

Cowboys From Hell has plenty of good moments. 'Cemetery Gates', 'The Art Of Shredding' and the title track are all excellent. There are a number of decent back-up tracks too.

This album may have been hugely influential on the thrash scene, but influential doesn't always mean great in isolation. Cowboys From Hell lives up to some of the hype...and then manages to live up to the rest of it too...

Check out... 'Medicine Man'.
